For the TV film “Il capitano 2” directed by Vittorio Sindoni,
an exploding van was required for a cinematic sequence.
It featured the main actor getting onto the van, driving
and jump in the water from a cargo harbour docking to
avoid the explostion in a danger zone, which actually
happens whenever he jumps with the vehicle.
To accomplish the shot, two 16mm high-speed cameras were used along with three van
miniature replicas to allow multiple attempts. Since the miniature alignment and movements before
the explosion were tricky as well as the pulling tools used by special effects crew, Gianluca Dentici
used a multiple view monitor station equipped with a mixer to overlap miniature footage with the live
action clean plate previously shot by the first shooting unit.
Besides, another shot featured a rolling and battering car models tumbling from an highway down to a
cliff and then breaking down in the sea.
